Soap by the Slice

Until now, I’ve been packaging all my soap in beautiful packaging suitable for gift giving. However, as more people start to try and enjoy my soap there is a demand for the same awesome soap for daily use without the added expense of packaging. So here are your choices, available online at Etsy or in Quesnel at the Farmer’s Market throughout the summer:

Calendula Citrus

Chocolate

Chocolate Mint

Coconut Milk/Lemongrass

Hardworking Hands Scrub Soap

Lavender Coconut Milk

Peppermint Poppy Seed Foot Scrub

Pink Clay Soap (with Lavender and Rose)

Quesnel Farmer’s Market 2012

My first summer market was a great success. Fantastic weather and a great, enthusiastic crowd . . . good music too and I was right in front of the stage so could enjoy the show from my booth.

At my booth – soap, shampoo bars, body butters, eggs, cutting boards, strawberry plants

Soap sold by the slice . . . Calendula Citrus was the favourite, Coconut Milk scented with Listea and Lemongrass a close second!

Shampoo bars, unscented herbal soaps, body butters, salves, and gift wrapped soap.

My husband’s awesome cutting boards. Many who bought at the Christmas Markets came back to tell us how much the love using them.

Tucked away in the shade, people could come in and browse and chat at leisure.

Body Care Herbs: An A-to-Z Guide

This weekend while selling my soap and body care products at the local Christmas Farmers’ Market, a very enthusiastic customer took a look at my array of soaps and asked for a “quick overview” of the healing properties of the herbs I’d chosen to use.  I  soon realized there could be nothing quick about it, and her question inspired me to write the this  post on my Forest Garden blog.  Think of it as a quick reference dictionary for the most common uses of some of the most widely used herbs for beauty and personal care products.

If you are interested in the properties of herbs used in natural body care products and want to make more informed choices or learn which herbs are best for your needs, take a look at the post here : Body Care Herbs A-Z

Calendula, Borage and Mullein - three of my favourite herbs to grow, enjoy and incorporate in my body care products. Learn more about their properties and uses at my Forest Garden blog.

Tree Medicine Salve

Tree Medicine Salve

All the medicine of the north woods in a sweet smelling salve. Pine, spruce and fir needles, spruce pitch and spruce essential oil combine in this general purpose salve that is useful for itching skin, bug bites, minor cuts and scrapes, as well as muscle aches.

Spruce pitch is one of the most multipurpose medicinals of the Boreal forest and no, it doesn’t make the salve sticky after it has been dissolved in the oil, but it does make it smell terrific! Some people swear by it as the ultimate remedy for the summer onslaught of mosquitoes. Others have said they could throw away all their herbal medicines and just keep spruce pitch as it is so versatile and healing. I myself had a slow-healing deep wound this summer. I tried this and that but it just wouldn’t heal and the inflammation persisted. One day on a walk, when it started bleeding again, I wandered over to the nearest spruce tree and dabbed a bit of fresh running pitch over the cut. It sealed the wound over completely and healed it without any further delay or irritation.

Evergreen Forest Soap

Evergreen Forest Soap

A bar of Boreal goodness. This not only smells like a walk in the woods on a sunny winter day, but also has finely powdered fir needles for colour and texture.

If , like me, there is nowhere you’d rather be than in the wild winter woods, this is the soap for you. Each bar is hand-stamped.

Evergreen Forest Soap

Ingredients:  Saponified coconut, olive, soybean,  palm, and castor  oils, shea and cocoa butters, powdered fir needles, fir, spruce, pine and cedar essential oils.

Oats and Honey Soap

Oat and honey shea and cocoa butter soap

I love the amazing skin-conditioning properties of oats, but I don’t like the lumpy bumpiness of oatmeal soap.  This soap is full of silky, smooth oaty loveliness but I achieved it by using a strong infusion of milky oat tops (oat tea)  rather than oatmeal. Calendula blossoms are added for colour and  honey to give that bubbly honey lather and hint of honey scent. The bar is scented with anise essential oil.  This soap is sweet and mild and a good choice for sensitive or troubled skin.

oat and honey soap

Ingredients:  Saponified coconut, olive, soybean,  palm, and castor  oils, shea and cocoa butters, milky oat tops, calendula blossoms, honey, anise essential oil.

Coconut Milk Soap

Coconut Milk Soap

Made with thick, creamy coconut milk,  this soap has a  smooth, bubbling lather and is generously scented with uplifting lemongrass. An escape from winter!

Coconut milk soap with shea and cocoa butters

Ingredients:  Saponified coconut, olive, soybean,  palm, and castor  oils, shea and cocoa butters, coconut milk, lemongrass essential oil, parsley flakes.

Carrot and Vitamin E

Straight from the garden! The classic skin care combo of carrot and vitamin E.

Ingredients:  Saponified coconut, olive, soybean,  palm, and castor  oils, shea and cocoa butters, carrot juice, vitamin E, coriander essential oil.
